In wire EDM work on a Robofil there is no room for chance. Even the best program will not help if the machine was not correctly prepared. Most problems with cut quality, wire breaks or process instability do not come from the technology itself — they come from errors at the preparation stage.

⚙️ Why Is Machine Setup So Important?

Robofil is a system where everything must work together: wire, water, settings and workpiece. If one element is not working correctly, the whole process starts to drift. A well-prepared machine gives stable operation, better surface finish, fewer stoppages and lower costs.

✅ Step 1: Pre-Start Inspection

Before you touch the program, check the basics: work area cleanliness, guide condition and overall machine condition. This frequently skipped step matters enormously. Even minor contamination in the work area can affect wire guidance and process stability.

✅ Step 2: Wire Preparation

The wire must be straight, evenly wound and undamaged. If anything is wrong, problems appear very quickly: wire breaks, uneven cutting, frequent stoppages. Threading the wire is only part of it — you must also prepare it properly so it is ready to pass through the guides.

✅ Step 3: Wire Threading

On modern Robofil machines this is automated, but that does not mean you can ignore it. The machine passes the wire through the upper guide, workpiece and lower guide. After threading, confirm the wire is guided correctly with no resistance and that everything runs smoothly.

✅ Step 4: Dielectric Check

The dielectric cools the process, stabilises the spark and removes material. If its parameters are wrong: unstable cutting, poor quality, greater wire break risk. Check before starting:

  • Temperature
  • Conductivity
  • Flow rate

✅ Step 5: Workpiece Setup

The workpiece must be firmly clamped and correctly aligned to the machine axes. If it moves or is not correctly set, the whole process loses accuracy — even a perfect program will not help. This is the moment when setup precision has a direct impact on the final result.

✅ Step 6: Program Check

Before starting the machine, check the program one more time. Most common errors: wrong operation sequence, missing start settings, parameters not matched to the material. The machine executes exactly what is written — without any correction or interpretation.

✅ Step 7: Start and Monitoring

Only now do you start the process. At the beginning, watch closely: wire behaviour, process stability and the first passes — this is when all preparation errors typically show up.

⚠️ Common mistake: Many operators start the machine and walk away. Robofil requires monitoring. Watch whether the wire is working stably, whether any error messages appear and whether the process is running smoothly. Quick reaction to a problem often prevents a much larger stoppage.

❌ Most Common Setup Mistakes

  • Inadequate wire preparation — most common cause of cutting problems
  • Ignoring dielectric parameters — result: unstable machining, poor quality
  • Incorrect workpiece alignment — result: dimensional inaccuracy
  • No monitoring after start — result: problems detected too late
